The Mechanical Turk

The Turk was an ingenious chess-playing “machine” devised in 1770 by Wolfgang von Kempelen. A really wonderful description of it can be found here.
The modern-day equivalent is Amazon’s Mechanical Turk, which uses people to perform simple tasks of object recognition.
