Reverend Canaan Banana

Diplomat, minister and first president of Zimbabwe, Rev. Canaan Banana held that country’s highest office between 1980 and 1987.
He was later imprisoned on 11 charges of sodomy.
Banana had some difficulty investing the office of president with the required aura of reverence and in 1982 a law was passed in Zimbabwe forbidding jokes about the president’s name, though it continued to invite cheap jibes, illustrated later in such headlines as “Man raped by Banana[.]”
He died of cancer in 2003. He is survived by his wife, Janet Banana.
