Nigerian Oil Spills
June 4th, 2010
I don’t usually discuss political topics on this blog, but this article seemed worthy of mention:
It is impossible to know how much oil is spilled in the Niger delta each year because the companies [Shell, most notably] and the government keep that secret. However, two major independent investigations over the past four years suggest that as much is spilled at sea, in the swamps and on land every year as has been lost in the Gulf of Mexico so far.
Disrupting Urination Norms
January 5th, 2010

A fine example of hacking people:
Last week in Mumbai someone kindly explained to me the custom of putting wall tiles of gods from different religions along street facades. They’re positioned at pissing height – and act as a perfect deterrent in a reverent nation.
It Made My Day
November 18th, 2009
It Made My Day contains a collection of anecdotes that made each author’s day.
I was playing Lego Star Wars with my 8 yr old daughter. She kept killing me and I told her we were on the same side. She replied “I work alone,” and proceeded to kill me again. IMMD
Thanks to Andrea for bringing this site to my attention.

You should read The Wrath of the Killdozer because it’s an accurate title for a true story.

Memo to Me
June 28th, 2009

Memo to Me can automatically send you email reminders at specified times. It’s a terrific way to establish good habits and routines for yourself, or to just remind you of appointments. I’m scatterbrained and email-attentive, so having my mail client boss me around is a great way to actually get things done.
Checking In With Vitas
June 2nd, 2009
Some of you who’ve been reading this thing for a while may recall my post about Vitas, the Russian countertenor, and his video for the song “Opera #2.” If you don’t, you might enjoy watching this video before continuing.
Since I haven’t checked up on him in nearly two years, I was curious about Vitas’ current situation. As with my last post, I went to the source of all responsible journalism: YouTube comments. A selection:
- “Vitas is the most overpower!”
- “My neighbour she work with devil are she really??”
- “it is sooo like norways song alright? what is happening?”
- “vitas voice like a screaming creature.”
- “ACCORDION.”
- “I want his 4-octave wailing Russian babies!!!”
- “i want to rub his head”
- “in the music video, he actually has gills.”
- “i feel bad that he lost his home or whatever”
- “I especially like the Nazgul string section. They left Minas Morgul to play in Russia for this dude. “
- “i love vitas, i want him as a pet”
- “Vitas is half-dolphin.”
It sounds like Vitas is doing fine.
